TRADITIONAL MEDICINES

The medicine in the village is made from plants and minerals found in the area. Roots, seeds, leaves, and flowers are used to prepare remedies for illnesses and ailments. The Nubians have tested and developed these remedies over thousands of years. People use modern medicines, but they continue to use the traditional remedies that they know and trust.



Spice shops in town markets sell traditional medicines as well as herbs and spices.

Karkady also known as hibiscus

Karkady (Hibiscus) - Rich in vitamin C, karkady tea or juice is given to sick people as a tonic. It is also a very popular beverage. Try it and see for yourself !

miswaq

Miswaq - Made from the stems of a particular tree, it is used for tooth-cleaning.

hilba or fenugreek

Hilba (Fenugreek) - Fenugreek seeds are cooked as a porridge for new mothers.

fool beans

Fool (Beans) - The most common breakfast food, these beans grown in the rich silt of the Nile banks are considered to be the healthiest of foods.

hinna or henna

Hinna (Henna) - Henna leaves are crushed into a powder and mixed with water to make a paste. Besides being used to decorate hands and feet, it is used to protect the skin.

shamar or cumin

Shamar (Cumin) - Cumin seeds are boiled in water and drunk to treat stomachache or dysentery.

harjel

Harjel - Harjel leaves are soaked in water, and women drink the resulting infusion as a cure for menstrual cramps and related ailments.

atrun or natron

Atrun (Natron) - Mixed with lemon juice to make a fizzy remedy for indigestion. It is also mixed with crushed, boiled dates to make a porridge which new mothers drink to regain strength after giving birth.

black carraway

Al-Habba As-Sowda' (Black Caraway) - Black caraway seeds are tied into a cloth bag which is worn as a necklace. Smelling the bag of seeds cures headaches and bloody noses.

bakhoor

Bakhoor (Incense)- Burned on charcoal. Besides being used in celebrations, the smoke of bakhoor and frankincense is used to protect people from the "evil eye."
