TRANSPORTATION

Transportation within the village and its surrounding farms in some ways remains the way it has been for thousands of years. People often walk or ride donkeys or camels, and donkeys and camels carry heavy loads from place to place. A simple wooden sailboat is used for carrying people, animals and goods across the Nile. More modern means of transportation are also used. These include simple donkey and horse carts, as well as small pick-up trucks. There are no regular cars, because none of the roads are paved. People travel to nearby marketplaces or to the provincial capital of Dongola in these pick-ups or in buses.

Villagers ride donkeys to travel short distances in and around the village. The teenage boy on the left is on his way to the market, carrying a cloth bag for his purchases. The man on the right is using his feet as a "brake" to hold the donkey still while the picture is taken.

This works as a taxi in the village. People rent this cart to carry loads between the fields and the village.

This long-distance bus sometimes stops in the village. It carries passengers and goods between the national capital, Khartoum, and the villages of the rural areas. Goods and passengers also ride on the roof of the bus.
